Korumburra’s iconic Coal Creek Village is a great choice for an excursion stop on the way to or from camp. Educational topics can be covered such as Australian History, The Pioneers, Early Settlement, Sustainability, Light and Power, Fossil Fuels, Crafts, Bush Cooking and more.
Coal Creek has recently re-opened as a Community Park and Museum. What does this mean? Most importantly, it means free entry! It means community members, groups and visitors alike are free to enter the park and enjoy the facilities.
Coal Creek Village continues to showcase the fascinating history and priceless memorabilia of the area in its museum, it remains a vital resource for the education programs involving local and visiting school children.
Although entry is free, the following educational programs are available for groups at an extra charge
Going to School in 1901
Students experience school life in 1901. Foundation to Level 2 make comparisons with their own school lives and learn “The Three Rs”, while improving letter formation on slate boards. Level 3 and above progress to the use of nibbed pen and ink and explore key issues such as Federation and the National Flag.
Life in an Early Settlement Tour
Students explore how life would have been in an 1870s pioneer settlement. They are asked to make direct comparisons between past and present.
Bush Cooking and General Store
Gather round the fire and make damper while learning about the family life of pioneers. Then, step back in time by visiting our General Store and learn about a whole different way of shopping.
Old Fashioned Crafts
With no electricity how did children spend their free time? Students answer this question while experiencing hands-on tasks such as making peg dolls and pom-poms.
Coal! The Black Gold of Gippsland
Understand why coal was so important in the development of the area and its impact on the indigenous population. Visit the mining museum and the mine entrance to understand why the life of a miner was such a dangerous job.
Pioneer Timber Skills Demonstration
Learn how the early settlers built their homes, with a demonstration of broad axes and bush skills.
Picnic Games
Students play the games of the past and contrast them with what they do in their spare time. Activities include sack races, egg and spoon races and quoits.
Bush Tram Ride or Village Tractor Ride
Jump aboard the old carriages of our diesel tram as it meanders through our bushland, or ride the dray behind the “Red Rocket” tractor.
Sustainability: A Thing of the Past?
Explore the village to compare the life of the early settlers with our own. Were they more sustainable than we are today.
